Tasmania’s fishery industries have been pivotal towards the
upliftment of the economy, by increasing trade, offering employment
opportunities, among a host of other reforms. However, not many speak of the
benefits and luxuries of residing in a region so heavily invested in
sustainable fishing practices; for instance, waterfront dining in Tasmania. A lot of waterfront seafood eateries
have popped up recently in Hobart. Even a quick visit to the suburb of Battery
Point will reveal the sheer number of businesses that rely on the fishes of the
Tasmanian Pacific.
However, what is more
interesting, you can walk into a quality seafood diner or restaurant by the waterfront, and buy yourself a delicious
seven-course meal! Expect a meal boasting of:
i. Pacific oysters
Start your meal with some natural, raw oysters served on
ice. If this is your first time trying oysters, then you have to try them fresh
to get that half briny-half sweet taste. Alternately, you can also try the
oysters with smoked salmon, a specialty in certain
oyster bars in Hobart; they serve the oysters with salmon roe (eggs) and
wasabi. If you are familiar with oysters, then it may be good to order an Oysters Kilpatrick or a spicy,
tangy Mignonette.
ii. Oyster shooters
Sure, it is an oyster bar, but it is a bar, nonetheless! Unless you are a teetotaller, you
can walk into a waterfront oyster bar in
Tasmania, and order a Bloody Mary or a Japanese shooter or a Martini. All
of these cocktails carry an oyster which floats under the concoction. Enjoy
your favourite cocktails with a marine spin!
iii. Cold dishes
Cold seafood salads such as the sashimi platter will provide
you with a plateful of sashimi, accompanied by smoked soy, radish, wasabi, etc.
Alternately, you can try the wild fish ceviche- a nutritious salad with coconut
milk, coriander and a lot of healthy nutrients.
iv. Hot dishes
If you are yearning for a hot seafood meal, then do not stop
yourself from ordering a gourmet plate of Tasmanian scallops; most waterfront oyster bars in Tasmania
serve them with cauliflower veloute and season it with brown butter, lemon and
parsley.
Seared local catches are another option that can provide you
with a wholesome supper. If you are in the mood for something more experimental,
then you cannot go wrong with curried scallop pot pies, lemon and pepper squid,
oyster chowder or shellfish pasta.
Most of these options for waterfront dining in Tasmania boast of a cosy, warm atmosphere with
the scent of cooked seafood refusing to leave you. So, if you have not been to
one yet, you are missing out!
